Melanie Georgacopoulos Oval Facets collection

Melanie Georgacopoulos : Oval Facets

How do you feel about facets? Beautiful lines, cutting edges…
The London-based designer Melanie Georgacopoulos created a recent collection in addition to her Facets Collection, this time Oval Facets.
For this latest collection, Melanie has recreated oval gemstones, which are one of the most common and traditional gemstone cuts, from flat mother of pearl tiles. To recreate these traditional oval cuts, she has been using three-dimensional marquetry techniques to mimic the very popular gem cut in order to raise attention to the value that can be achieved through craftsmanship, rather than the material itself.
Myself, I really like mother of pearl (MOP). I love their opaque color, their iridescent look… this gemstone really stands out very well in Melanie’s Facets collection. The cuts make this stone even more striking, showing off all the beautiful colors it has to offer.

As pictured above are the White mother of pearl earrings, Peacock MOP earrings and Golden MOP earrings. Like pearls, Mother Of Pearl can be found in a various range of colors such as whites, greys, pinks, etc…
They all, though, have that multi-colored effect and glow.

Each MOP oval is painstakingly handcrafted from 37 individual flat segments of mother of pearl. To carve such shapes from a single piece of nacre would be impossible due to the limited size of this natural material.
The collection comes in either 18ct white and yellow gold.
