What I love about social media is that you can come across amazing jewelry artists. That’s how I “found” Made Line Jewelry earlier on this Summer.
Growing up in a family of crafters, collectors and entrepreneurs, Maddy quickly realized that creating was where she felt most at home. Her childhood was filled with magical days spent with her sisters, building fairy houses adorned with flowers and shells in her mother’s garden (I need to do this with my daughter too!), or working on craft projects at her grandmother’s house, nestled among the redwoods and surrounded by a vast collection of trinkets. These moments deeply nurtured her creativity and planted the seeds of a lifelong passion.
And here enters the backstory of her Pendulum charms. Maddy’s grandmother.
Designer Maddy on the Pendulum Charms: “they are designed to evoke a sense of intimacy and grounding. The series is loosely inspired by my grandma’s dowsing necklace that I was enamored with as a kid. Her original dowsing necklace had a chunky rock (Jasper I think) that she had wire wrapped herself. She taught me to hold the leather cord in my hand, letting the rock pendant face the earth, then I’d ask it a yes or no question. Depending on the way it moved, I got my answer! It almost felt like the stone had some sort of inherent wisdom. This may have been the first time that I felt some sort of mystical or spiritual force in a physical object.”
Maddy wanted to recreate this object and feeling in a modern way that represented her aesthetic (which she nailed perfectly, if I may say so!). As I told Maddy through DMs, just by looking at this piece, the Pendulum charms make me want to touch, rub, and fidget with them.
“I chose to make them with bright, colorful gemstones that feel cheerful and visually stunning. The forms themselves are soft, billowy, and meant to feel comforting.
I had envisioned making these for a few years and never got around to it. Earlier this year, I finally decided to make them. I surprised my grandma with them one day and asked to photograph them in her hands. I’m so grateful that I finally made them when I did, because the day after I photographed them with her, she went to the hospital and then passed away a few weeks later. My grandma instilled in me a passion for making things and had always been my pillar of creativity. She did so many art projects with me as a kid, I like to think that this was our last art project together. “
